Annie L. Burton

December 22, 2006

Burton was born in to slavery in the early 1850’s.  Her life was very interesting when she was growing up during the Civil War.  She was living around the time of the emancipation.  It was interesting to see how she took responsibilities of a bad situation.  For example, she cared for her younger siblingsafter the death of their mother.  Another thing that was interesting about this narrative was when shetook classes at a school.  In this school, the headmaster encouraged each student to write their life story.  This is what got Annie L.  Burton to write her auto biography.

Burton seemed like she had more or a positive and optomistic tone that the other writers.  Her childhood on the plantation seemed pretty bad, however she seemed to be one of the lucky ones.  As I read this article, it was very interesting to see how the emancipation impacted the lives of these people.

I wonder why an essay about Lincoln, some poems at the end of this narrative.

Issac Mason as a Slave

December 22, 2006

What was interesting to me was how some slaves still had a lot of confidence and the slave owners never completely destroyed the slaves.  Some had the hope and desire of escape.  This ties in well with Huck Finn.  Mason’s narritive and Twain’s Huck Finn has the same theme of escape.

I found it interesting when Mason wrote that said he was ignorent.  Slaves then resented the work so much that some started to get physical over it.  When Mason pushed his owner down, he never thought to himself how much trouble he may face.  He goes from one place to another trying to be a free man in an animalistic society.

Before Reading the Narratives

I expect to read things simular to Douglass writing.  It is interesting to learn the psychology of slaves, and what sort of emotional ans physical obstacles they had to face

Satire 2

December 19, 2006

What was onteresting about Colbertwas that he was always sarcastic.  He said he wanted a draft, but he contrives himself and get a point across that he doesn’t want a draft.  If he wanted a draft, he would have said more positive things about it as opposed to mock it.  This was certainly not a laugh out loud type comedy, and it would make some people uneasy (which is the point of satire).  He makes people look like they are politically stupid to possibly think that there should be a draft to Iraq…

Racism(2)

December 14, 2006

I don’t feel that there is a nation in the world that holds “racism” in greater horror than does in the United States.  It could have always been this way.  Racism is a national obsession.  Newspapers and politics denounce it, churches talk about it, and America is racked with it.  Racism is the conviction that members of one race are inherently superior to members of other races.  This conviction is manifested by discriminatory behavior towards the members of the supposed “inferior” race.

Middle East

December 13, 2006

Today we had another talk in regards to the Middle East.  I found it interesting that Iraq was not our biggest problem.  It was interesting to learn about Cheney’s oil company.  In this country, our main concern is money.  We lose nearly one billion dollars a day and I still don’t understand why it is so high… It is true when Alec siad

“It ridiculous to think that an American company would intentially hurt the U.S. troops and economy just for personal gain.”

I did not know that there was a serious Arab Israeli problem.

Racism Blog

December 10, 2006

I had a hard time finding a good article dealing with racism.  I remember reading the newspaper around the time we were working on the Evil essay to find examples or reasserting evil, I read about this man who was considered a “racist animal”.  It turnes out that he killed a white lady at a public mall.  According to the “racist animal” he killed her because of who she was.  It seemed like he kept trying to justfy himself. It is easy to see that we are still living in a racist community where each race has this big ego and superego.

Satire

December 6, 2006

Satire is when humor is used to point out some problems in society.  For example, the Movie The Squid and the whatle is an example of satire.  This is about kids who’s parents are seperating.  This makes viewersunconfortable to see because it gets very sad, however, it makes a point that it can really harm children.

The concept of Satire can be traced back to the evil essay we had to write.  To some, Satire is evil, because it gets people to feel bad about their society.  I think that this is needed because without it, people will not be aware of the problems as much.  This is why Satire is so popular.

Other examples of satire such as The Weatherman, or Catch 22 are made for entertainment, however, it has some meaning .  I personally enjoy these Satires.  People need to feel unconfortable to understand that something in society was not and is not right.

Douglass

December 6, 2006

I’d like to know more about Douglass as a slave.  His writing is very sophisticated and he learned to read and write on his own.  In his writing we read in class, he wrote about singing and how slaves used to sing in bad times to drown their sorrow.  Douglass said that he never really sung to express happiness, but usually to drown his sorrows.  I thought this was interesting and I would like to find more of his writings.
